A New HVAC System Is Only as Good as Its Installation

Here is what we do on every job, why it matters, and what it means for the life of your system.

  • 100 microns: our vacuum target, 5× deeper than the manufacturer's 500.
  • 10-minute decay test on every install, which must hold under 500 microns.
  • Every joint brazed with nitrogen flowing to stop oxide scale.

Most early system failures come from problems hidden inside the walls and line set: moisture, debris, oxidation, and slow leaks. They don't come from the equipment itself.

At Blue Air, every install follows the manufacturer's best practices, and in several places we go beyond what they require.

Installed by NATE-Certified Technicians

NATE (North American Technician Excellence) is the largest nonprofit certification program for heating and air conditioning technicians. What that means for you:

  • Proven knowledge, not just experience. Certified technicians pass a core exam and a specialty exam built from real-world scenarios, from electrical safety to airflow.
  • Up to date. Certification expires every two years. Renewal requires retaking the specialty exam or 16 hours of continuing education.
  • Done right the first time. Tested skills mean fewer repeat visits, and a system installed to manufacturer specifications runs more efficiently and lasts longer.
  • Recognized by manufacturers. Carrier, for example, requires at least half of the technicians at its Factory Authorized Dealers to be NATE certified.
  • Easy to verify. Our NATE ID is 998976. You can check it yourself with the Verify a NATE ID tool on the NATE website.

1. We Document Every Step of Your Install

You get a photo and reading record of the work, not just a finished system. We capture each critical step as it happens:

  • Condition of the existing line set and the pressure test result
  • Brazed joints, with nitrogen flowing
  • Vacuum readings and the decay test result
  • Final refrigerant charge, pressures, and temperatures
  • The finished install, inside and outside

This record backs up your manufacturer warranty, gives future technicians a clear starting point, and lets you see exactly what was done in your home.

2. Every Joint Is Brazed With Nitrogen Flowing

We flow dry nitrogen through the copper while we braze every joint. It pushes out the oxygen, so no scale can form on the inside of the pipe.

When copper is heated to brazing temperature with air inside, the inner wall turns into flaky black oxide scale. Once the system runs, that scale breaks loose and travels with the refrigerant. It can clog the metering device and filter drier, break down the oil, and wear out the compressor.

The damage is hidden inside the pipe, so you can't see it from the outside. That is why skipping nitrogen is a common shortcut, and why we never take it.

3. Deep Vacuum to About 100 Microns, Then a 10-Minute Decay Test

Before any refrigerant goes in, we pull the system down to about 100 microns. Then we shut off the pump and watch the gauge for 10 minutes. The system must stay under 500 microns to pass.

A deep vacuum boils off moisture and removes air from the lines and indoor coil. Moisture left behind mixes with the refrigerant oil to form acid and sludge, which attack the compressor from the inside.

The decay test is the proof. If the reading climbs past 500 microns with the pump off, there is a leak or moisture still in the system. We find and fix it before charging, so you don't get a slow leak that shows up next summer. The readings go into your install record.

4. Copper Lines Bent Correctly, and Neat to Look At

We bend every line with the right tube bender, so each turn has a smooth radius and the pipe stays perfectly round.

A kinked or flattened bend chokes the refrigerant flow, which makes the system work harder and cost more to run. It also leaves a stressed spot in the copper that can crack and leak years later. Fewer fittings also mean fewer joints that could ever leak.

We also take pride in how the job looks. Lines run straight, square to the house, and are neatly secured, because the outside of your system should look as good as it runs.

5. We Test Your Existing Copper Lines Before We Reuse Them

We never hook a new system to old copper on trust. If we plan to reuse your existing line set, we prove it is clean and tight first:

  1. Clean. We flush the existing lines and push foam cleaning plugs through them to remove old oil, debris, and contaminants left by the old system.
  2. Pressure test. We pressurize the lines with dry nitrogen and watch for any drop that would point to a leak.
  3. Decide. If the lines pass, we reuse them with confidence. If they fail, we tell you before the install and recommend replacing the line set.

Old oil and debris can ruin a new compressor, and a leaking line will lose refrigerant no matter how good the new equipment is. Finding that out before the install protects your investment and your warranty.

6. Supply and Return Plenums Sized for Your System

We size the supply and return plenums to the airflow your new equipment needs, following ACCA Manual D, the industry's duct design standard. A common shortcut is to reuse the old plenums or simply match the openings on the new unit.

An air conditioner needs a steady volume of air across its coil, nominally about 400 cubic feet per minute (CFM) per ton. Returns are the most common problem: one field guide reports that most systems it sees have returns undersized by 30% or more.

Manual D also caps air speed at 900 feet per minute in supply ducts and 700 in returns. We size to stay under those limits, so your system moves the air it needs, quietly.

Real Readings From a Blue Air Install

Every evacuation is logged and time-stamped. These readings are from a job on July 15, 2026: the system reached 114 microns, then held at 251 microns after the 10-minute decay test, well under our 500-micron limit.

Our setup: vacuum pump, large-diameter hoses, digital manifold, and wireless micron gauge.

How Our Vacuum Compares to the Manufacturer's Requirement

The manufacturer's installation instructions set the minimum. We go well past it on every measure.

  • Vacuum depth. Manufacturer: 500 microns. Blue Air: about 100 microns, 5× deeper.
  • Hold test, pump off. Manufacturer: about 7 minutes. Blue Air: 10 minutes.
  • Pass mark for a tight, dry system. Manufacturer: holds at 1,000 microns. Blue Air: holds under 500 microns, twice as strict.

A micron measures how little air and moisture is left in the system, so a lower number means a drier, cleaner system.

Undersized vs. Properly Sized Plenums

  • Airflow. Undersized: below what the system is rated for. Properly sized: full rated airflow across the coil.
  • Static pressure. Undersized: high; the blower strains to push air. Properly sized: within the manufacturer's rated range.
  • Noise. Undersized: whistling registers, loud air handler. Properly sized: quiet operation.
  • Comfort and cost. Undersized: weak airflow, uneven rooms, higher bills. Properly sized: even temperatures at rated efficiency.
  • Equipment life. Undersized: extra wear on the blower motor and compressor; coil can freeze. Properly sized: equipment runs as designed.

What This Means for You

Each of these steps adds time on install day. They also prevent the hidden problems behind most early system failures.

  • Technicians. A rushed install: no certification required. A Blue Air install: NATE certified, renewed every two years.
  • Documentation. A rushed install: little or none. A Blue Air install: photos and readings of every critical step.
  • Brazing. A rushed install: torch only, scale forms inside. A Blue Air install: nitrogen flowing through every joint.
  • Evacuation. A rushed install: short pump run, no gauge proof. A Blue Air install: down to about 100 microns.
  • Leak check. A rushed install: often skipped. A Blue Air install: 10-minute decay test, must hold under 500 microns.
  • Line bends. A rushed install: kinks, extra fittings. A Blue Air install: tube bender, smooth radius, neat runs.
  • Existing lines. A rushed install: reused as-is. A Blue Air install: cleaned and pressure tested; replacement advised if they fail.
  • Plenums. A rushed install: old plenums reused or matched to the unit's openings. A Blue Air install: supply and return sized to your system's airflow (ACCA Manual D).
  • Standards. A rushed install: minimum to get it running. A Blue Air install: manufacturer best practices, and beyond.

The result is a system that runs efficiently, lasts longer, and keeps its warranty protected.

Customer Reviews

What our customers are saying

We called for after hours service and Eddy responded quickly and with no hesitations. He is knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly communicated everything he was doing, including what the the fix would be and cost. We will gladly use him again for any AC needs, and refer all others who need service to choose Blue Air.

Matthew H.

Wow! Incredible service and the knowledge to back it up! My experience with Eddy was fantastic. Stop scrolling and reading reviews and call now & you won’t be sorry. Our AC was not working properly – we had a diagnostic with an alternate company who found out it was a line leak, but they couldn’t fix it for a few days and needed an advanced technician. We wanted a second opinion and another estimate for the work, in the meantime. We were so glad we connected with Blue Air. Eddy was able to pinpoint the exact spot of the leak and offered to repair it on the spot!

Kayla L.

Eddy is a professional and reliable. My husband and I went to dinner late in the evening on a Saturday night and came home to a warm house. I called Eddy immediately and he was at the house within 20 minutes. He diagnosed the issue and fixed the capacitor within minutes ( a fair and reasonable charge too) and the cool air was flowing again. I will definitely have Eddy on speed dial and for all the maintenance on the HVAC system.

Jacqueline B.

I use them for regular maintenance and today my A/C stopped working. I called the team at Blue Air and they came to my house within a few hours and had the system working perfectly again. 100% would recommend.
